Beehive honey cake at Hyman Fine House

Residents of Jewish Care’s Hyman Fine House in Brighton got into the festive mood when volunteer Rita Gordon made a honey cake in the shape of a beehive.

The activity came prior to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, when it is customary to eat sweet things.

Rita was helped by residents Edna Roseman and Cissie Luper MBE; the latter celebrated her 101st birthday this week. Mrs Luper received her MBE in 1999 for services to the Leukaemia Research Fund in Brighton and Hove.

Care manager Sue Jones said: “We’ve been doing a whole raft of activities around the New Year and we decorated the dining room with pictures of apples and honey. We also had a Rosh Hashanah quiz. The home will be holding synagogue services and the shofar (a ram’s horn) will be blown. It is a very nice time of year and the residents enjoy the traditional aspects of Jewish life.”
